Description

MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 10.6.1 until 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2, MariaDB insufficiently validated counts, offsets, lengths, and field boundaries in FRM metadata while opening binary FRM files. An attacker able to place a crafted FRM file in the data directory could trigger out-of-bounds reads or writes, crash the server, or potentially execute code. This issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in MariaDB (CVE-2026-107821) involves insufficient validation of FRM metadata when opening binary FRM files. An attacker could place a crafted FRM file in the data directory to trigger out-of-bounds reads or writes, crash the server, or potentially execute code. The issue affects MariaDB versions from 10.6.1 to 10.6.27, 10.11.1 to 10.11.18, 11.4.1 to 11.4.12, 11.8.1 to 11.8.8, 12.3.1 to 12.3.2, and 13.0.1.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking MariaDB server versions against affected ranges. Use commands like 'mysql --version' or 'mariadb --version' to check your version. Compare it with vulnerable versions: 10.6.1-10.6.27, 10.11.1-10.11.18, 11.4.1-11.4.12, 11.8.1-11.8.8, 12.3.1-12.3.2, 13.0.1.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with FILE privilege and access to the datadir could exploit this to crash the MariaDB server, read or write memory outside intended boundaries, or execute arbitrary code. This could lead to data corruption, unauthorized access, or denial of service. Exploitation requires significant privileges and access, reducing risk in properly configured environments.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by enabling unauthorized data access or modification, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. A successful exploit might lead to data breaches, requiring breach notifications and potential fines under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MariaDB to patched versions: 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, or 13.0.2. Ensure proper access controls restrict FILE privilege and datadir access to trusted users only.
