Improper Authentication in FalkorDB via Bolt Endpoint

Description

An improper authentication vulnerability in the is_authenticated function (src/bolt/bolt_api.c) in FalkorDB before 4.20.0 allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to execute graph queries without credentials through the Bolt endpoint. The function decides whether a password is required by issuing an empty AUTH command to Redis and treats only a WRONGPASS error as meaning that a password is required; any other error, such as LOADING while a dataset is being loaded, MASTERDOWN during replication failover, or OOM under memory pressure, causes the client to be treated as authenticated. Only deployments that enable the Bolt endpoint (BOLT_PORT, disabled by default) are affected.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper authentication issue in FalkorDB versions before 4.20.0. The is_authenticated function incorrectly handles authentication by sending an empty AUTH command to Redis. If Redis returns any error other than WRONGPASS (like LOADING, MASTERDOWN, or OOM), the function treats the client as authenticated without proper credentials. This allows remote unauthenticated attackers to execute graph queries via the Bolt endpoint if it is enabled.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Bolt endpoint is enabled by inspecting the FalkorDB configuration for BOLT_PORT settings. Use network scanning tools like nmap to detect open Bolt ports (default is 6667). Monitor Redis error logs for LOADING, MASTERDOWN, or OOM errors during authentication attempts.

Impact Analysis

If you use FalkorDB with the Bolt endpoint enabled, an attacker could gain unauthorized access to your database and execute arbitrary graph queries without valid credentials. This could lead to data theft, manipulation, or denial of service if the system is under memory pressure or replication issues.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using affected FalkorDB versions may fail compliance audits due to insufficient authentication controls, risking legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FalkorDB to version 4.20.0 or later to fix the improper authentication flaw. Disable the Bolt endpoint by setting BOLT_PORT to disabled if not required. Implement network-level controls to restrict access to the Bolt port.
