Description

A flaw was found in GIMP. The XCF loader processes image-simulation-intent and image-simulation-bpc parasites without ensuring the parasite data is present before dereferencing it. Opening a specially crafted XCF file with a zero-size simulation parasite can cause a NULL pointer dereference and crash the GIMP application.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a flaw in GIMP where the XCF file loader does not check if parasite data exists before using it. Opening a crafted XCF file with a zero-size simulation parasite causes a NULL pointer dereference, leading to a crash.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by monitoring GIMP for crashes when opening XCF files. Check GIMP logs for NULL pointer dereference errors. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

The impact is limited to GIMP crashing when opening a maliciously crafted XCF file. It does not allow code execution or data theft, but could disrupt workflows if exploited.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar regulations as it does not involve data exposure or unauthorized access. It may indirectly affect compliance if GIMP crashes disrupt data processing workflows.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid opening untrusted XCF files in GIMP. Update GIMP to the latest patched version once available. Monitor vendor advisories for updates.
