CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is an SQL injection vulnerability in the wp-post-author plugin for WordPress. It allows attackers to manipulate SQL queries by injecting malicious code through input fields, potentially accessing or modifying database contents.

Detection Guidance

Detection of SQL injection vulnerabilities like this one typically involves reviewing web application logs for suspicious SQL queries or input patterns. Check for unusual database queries in logs that may contain user-supplied input. Use tools like SQLmap to test for SQL injection flaws in the wp-post-author plugin. Inspect HTTP requests for payloads containing SQL syntax such as ' OR 1=1 -- or similar.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive data from your database, modify or delete records, or gain unauthorized access to your WordPress site. This could lead to data breaches, website defacement, or further attacks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or exposure of personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and security. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the wp-post-author plugin to version 4.1.0 or later to address the SQL injection flaw. Disable the plugin if an update is not immediately available. Implement input validation and parameterized queries in any custom code. Monitor database access logs for unusual activity and restrict database user permissions to least privilege.
