Path Traversal in dataclasses-avroschema via Enum Default

Description

dataclasses-avroschema generates Avro schemas from Python dataclasses, Pydantic models, and Faust Records and generates Python code from Avro schemas. From version 0.38.0 through 0.70.5, FieldRepresentation.get_field_default renders a schema-controlled enum field default as an enum member reference after applying case conversion but without validating it as an identifier. Newlines, operators, and punctuation can escape the intended reference and inject constrained statements into the generated module, allowing namespace modification or preventing the module from loading. Version 0.70.6 fixes the vulnerability by validating enum defaults as names.

Executive Summary

The vulnerability in dataclasses-avroschema (versions 0.38.0 to 0.70.5) involves the FieldRepresentation.get_field_default function. It incorrectly renders enum field defaults by applying case conversion without validating them as identifiers. This allows special characters like newlines or operators to inject malicious code into generated Python modules, potentially modifying namespaces or preventing module loading.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject arbitrary code into your application by crafting a malformed enum default value. This could lead to unauthorized namespace changes, denial of service by preventing module loading, or other unintended behavior in applications using affected versions of dataclasses-avroschema.

Mitigation Strategies

Update dataclasses-avroschema to version 0.70.6 or later to fix the vulnerability by validating enum defaults as names.
