CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an unauthenticated SQL injection flaw in Zen Cart versions up to 2.2.2. It exists in the PayPal IPN handler function zen_db_perform within the file includes/modules/payment/paypaldp.php. The issue occurs because the txn_id parameter is directly concatenated into a SQL UPDATE statement's WHERE clause without proper sanitization. Attackers can manipulate this input to inject malicious SQL commands, potentially leading to unauthorized database access or modifications.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in Zen Cart, inspect the PayPal IPN handler files for improper input handling. Check if the txn_id parameter is directly used in SQL queries without sanitization. Review the zen_db_perform function in includes/modules/payment/paypaldp.php for unsanitized WHERE clause conditions. Monitor network traffic for suspicious PayPal IPN POST requests with malformed txn_id values.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the database. Potential impacts include unauthorized modifications to transaction records, financial fraud, extraction and cracking of administrator credentials, and possible compromise of sensitive data stored in the database.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive personal data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. A successful exploit could result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the provided patch 557154f4fa025f51553094f47b06aa024220c48f to address the SQL injection issue. Ensure all user inputs in SQL queries are properly sanitized or parameterized. Disable or restrict access to the PayPal IPN handler if not in use. Update Zen Cart to the latest version if available. Monitor logs for unauthorized SQL query attempts or unusual transaction activities.
