Description

A vulnerability was determined in Zen Cart up to 2.2.2. Affected is the function zen_call_function of the file admin/includes/functions/general.php of the component Administrative Module Management. Executing a manipulation of the argument use_function can lead to code injection. The attack can be launched remotely. Attacks of this nature are highly complex. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The exploit has been publicly disclosed and may be utilized. The vendor explains: "We don't consider this an independently exploitable vulnerability. The only path to controlling `use_function`/`configuration_value` in the `configuration` table is the SQL Patch tool (raw arbitrary SQL execution) or a pre-existing SQL injection elsewhere".

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a code injection flaw in Zen Cart versions up to 2.2.2. It exists in the administrative module management component, specifically in the zen_call_function function of admin/includes/functions/general.php. The issue allows an attacker to manipulate the use_function argument, leading to arbitrary code execution via call_user_func(). The vendor notes this requires prior access to modify database configuration values or use the SQL Patch tool.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized modifications in Zen Cart's admin/includes/functions/general.php file or suspicious entries in the configuration table via SQL queries. Look for unexpected function calls like 'system' or 'exec' in database-stored configuration values.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary system commands on the server, potentially leading to full compromise of the web server. This may result in data breaches, unauthorized access, or persistent control over the system. The attack requires either administrative access or the ability to inject SQL via other means.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, which may violate GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements. Organizations could face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage if exploited. Compliance programs may need to address this risk through patching and access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Zen Cart to the latest version beyond 2.2.2. Remove or restrict access to the SQL Patch tool. Audit the configuration table for malicious entries and revoke unauthorized database modifications.
