Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a command injection flaw in the Edimax BR-6208AC router version 1.32. It exists in the /goform/formAccept endpoint where the submit-url parameter is improperly handled. An attacker can remotely inject and execute arbitrary commands on the device without authentication by manipulating this parameter. The system() function executes user-controlled input without sanitization, enabling full command execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Edimax BR-6208AC router is running firmware version BR-6208AC_1.32. Use network scanning tools like Nmap to identify the device and verify its firmware version. Test the /goform/formAccept endpoint by sending a crafted POST request with a manipulated submit-url parameter to see if command injection is possible.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on your Edimax BR-6208AC router remotely. This could lead to full device compromise, allowing the attacker to take control of your network, steal data, install malware, or use the device as part of a botnet. Since the device is no longer supported, there will be no security patches to fix this issue.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote command injection on the Edimax BR-6208AC router, which could lead to unauthorized access and control of the device. Such access may compromise data integrity, confidentiality, and availability, potentially violating compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health data security) if the device processes regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Since the Edimax BR-6208AC is no longer supported, the best mitigation is to replace the device with a supported router. If replacement is not possible, isolate the device from the internet to reduce exposure. Monitor network traffic for suspicious POST requests to /goform/formAccept.
