Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the KusalkaSilva Learning-Management-System where the remove_announcements.php file's mysql_query function lacks authentication checks. An attacker can manipulate the ID argument to perform unauthorized state-changing actions remotely. The exploit is public and the project has not responded to the reported issue.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthenticated access to endpoints like remove_announcements.php by sending requests without session tokens. Look for SQL injection patterns such as id=1 OR 1=1 in URLs or form inputs. Inspect network traffic for requests to admin pages like admin/student_table.php without proper authentication.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could remotely delete announcements, class enrollments, files, or entire tables of data by manipulating the ID parameter. This could lead to permanent data loss, denial of service, or unauthorized exposure of sensitive information like student names and usernames.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure or destruction, violating GDPR's data integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement session checks and CSRF protection on all state-changing endpoints. Validate and sanitize all user inputs, especially ID parameters, to prevent SQL injection. Restrict access to admin pages to authenticated users only. Monitor for unusual deletion or update operations in the database.
