CWE ID Description
CWE-88 The product constructs a string for a command to be executed by a separate component in another control sphere, but it does not properly delimit the intended arguments, options, or switches within that command string.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an argument injection flaw in Netcore NR268 version 1.7.121109. The issue exists in the DDNS component, specifically in the execvp function of the file /router/DDNSset.cgi. An attacker can manipulate the Hostname argument to inject malicious commands, which are then executed by the system.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves argument injection via the Hostname parameter in the DDNSset.cgi component of Netcore NR268 1.7.121109. To detect it, inspect network traffic for requests to /router/DDNSset.cgi with unusual Hostname values. Check logs for command injection attempts or unexpected system calls from this process.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands on the affected device. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or disruption of services. Since the attack is remote and requires minimal privileges, it poses a significant risk to the integrity and confidentiality of the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations. Organizations using the affected Netcore NR268 device may face legal and financial penalties due to non-compliance with data protection standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Netcore NR268 firmware to the latest version to patch the vulnerability in the DDNS component. Disable remote access to the DDNS configuration interface if not required. Monitor network traffic for unusual activity targeting the /router/DDNSset.cgi endpoint.
