CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a SQL injection vulnerability in the Online Examination System. The branch parameter in the registration form is not properly validated before being used in an SQL INSERT statement. An attacker can manipulate this parameter to inject malicious SQL code, allowing them to create additional rows in the users table. Specifically, they can insert a new administrator account with full control of the application.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, monitor network traffic for suspicious registration requests to the Online Examination System. Check database logs for unexpected INSERT statements or duplicate accounts. Use tools like SQLMap to test the branch parameter in the registration form for injection points.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to the system by creating an admin account. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized modifications, or complete system compromise. Users' personal data and exam results could be exposed or altered.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access and potential data breaches. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for sensitive health information. A breach could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately disable the registration form if possible. Apply input validation to the branch parameter in include/database.php and include/session.php. Use prepared statements instead of direct SQL concatenation. Monitor for unauthorized account creation, especially with userlevel set to 9.
