CWE ID Description
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.
CWE-121 A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function).

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack-based buffer overflow in the Wavlink WL-WN530BE1-A device, specifically in the Settings Export CGI component. It occurs due to unsafe use of the strcpy function when handling manipulated HTTP_COOKIE or X-Cmd arguments. This flaw allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by sending crafted requests.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the affected Wavlink WL-WN530BE1-A device and testing the /cgi-bin/ExportAllSettings.cgi endpoint for stack-based buffer overflow via manipulated HTTP_COOKIE or X-Cmd arguments. Use network scanning tools like nmap to identify vulnerable devices and send crafted requests to the CGI endpoint.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to remote code execution, allowing attackers to take full control of the affected device. It may result in unauthorized access, data theft, or disruption of network services. Since the exploit is public, the risk of exploitation is high.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations using this device may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately discontinue use of the affected Wavlink WL-WN530BE1-A device. Contact the vendor for a patch or update. Isolate the device from your network to prevent remote exploitation. Monitor network traffic for unusual activity targeting /cgi-bin/ExportAllSettings.cgi.
