Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a path traversal issue in jbardin scp.py up to version 0.16.1. It affects the _recv_file/_recv_pushd functions in the SCP Receive Handler component. An attacker can manipulate file paths to write files outside the intended download directory by exploiting insufficient checks on server-controlled filenames.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your system uses jbardin scp.py version 0.16.1 or earlier. Inspect installed packages with commands like 'pip show scp.py' or 'pip list' to verify the version. Monitor network traffic for unusual file paths or unauthorized file writes during SCP transfers.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could overwrite sensitive files, execute arbitrary code, or gain unauthorized access to system files if they control the server sending files. This could lead to data breaches, system compromise, or further lateral movement within a network.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements by allowing unauthorized access to sensitive data, leading to potential breaches of GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health information privacy). Organizations may face legal penalties or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade jbardin scp.py to version 0.16.2 or later using 'pip install --upgrade scp.py'. Ensure the patch commit 42fc3aaa71411daed60544e3b40179c1038bed5d is applied. Review file permissions and restrict write access to sensitive directories.
