Executive Summary

CVE-2026-109156 is a path traversal vulnerability in SeldonIO MLServer versions up to 1.6.1. It exists in the _extract_env function of the mlserver/env.py file, specifically in the environment_tarball Handler component. An attacker can manipulate this function to perform path traversal attacks from a remote location.

Detection Guidance

Check if MLServer version 1.6.1 or earlier is installed by running pip show mlserver or mlserver --version. Inspect the mlserver/env.py file for the _extract_env function to verify if path traversal vulnerabilities exist in environment tarball handling.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to access unauthorized files or directories on the server. It could lead to data breaches, unauthorized code execution, or disruption of MLServer services. The impact depends on the server's configuration and the attacker's goals.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing sensitive data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MLServer to a version beyond 1.6.1 if available. If no patch exists, disable the environment tarball handler in MLServer configurations. Monitor the MLServer GitHub repository for updates or patches from the vendor.
