Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects PublicCMS versions up to 5.202608.a. It involves an open redirect issue in the SafeConfigComponent.getSafeUrl function where manipulating the returnUrl argument can redirect users to unintended sites. The attack can be executed remotely and has been publicly disclosed.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves an open redirect in PublicCMS due to improper handling of the returnUrl parameter. To detect it, inspect network traffic for requests to SafeConfigComponent.getSafeUrl with manipulated returnUrl values pointing to external domains. Check server logs for unusual redirect patterns or unauthorized domain accesses.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows attackers to trick users into visiting malicious sites by redirecting them from a trusted PublicCMS domain. This could lead to phishing attacks, credential theft, or malware downloads. Users may unknowingly expose sensitive information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it is an open redirect issue in PublicCMS. However, open redirects could potentially be exploited for phishing attacks, which may indirectly impact compliance by exposing user data or violating security policies.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update PublicCMS to the latest version if available. If no patch exists, disable or restrict access to the SafeConfigComponent.getSafeUrl endpoint. Implement input validation to reject returnUrl values pointing to external domains. Monitor logs for exploitation attempts and block suspicious IP addresses.
