Description

The HivePress – Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the '<custom user attribute slug> (e.g. hp_custom_link)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.7.32 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that an administrator has configured a custom user attribute with a display_format template placing the %value% token inside an href, src, or style attribute context, which is a documented and expected use of the plugin's attribute display feature.

Executive Summary

The HivePress WordPress plugin up to version 1.7.32 has a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability. It occurs because user input in custom attributes is not properly sanitized or escaped. Attackers can inject malicious scripts via the custom user attribute slug parameter, which execute when other users view pages with these attributes. Exploitation requires an admin to configure a custom attribute with a display format that places user input inside href, src, or style attributes.

The vulnerability exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the plugin's handling of custom user attributes.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves stored XSS via custom user attributes in the HivePress plugin. To detect it, inspect WordPress sites using HivePress versions up to 1.7.32 for custom user attributes with display formats containing %value% in href, src, or style attributes. Check plugin files for unsanitized user input in attributes.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages. When users access these pages, the scripts execute in their browsers. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or defacement of the website. The impact depends on user privileges and the nature of the injected scripts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, leading to potential fines or penalties under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the HivePress plugin to the latest version to apply security fixes. Review and remove any custom user attributes with display formats placing %value% in href, src, or style attributes. Monitor for suspicious activity or unauthorized script injections in pages.
