Description

The RSS Aggregator by Feedzy – Feed to Post, Autoblogging, News & YouTube Video Feeds Aggregator plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'media:thumbnail@url' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.11 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires the attacker to control an external RSS feed that the target site has already configured for import; no WordPress account or special plugin configuration is needed beyond that condition.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the WordPress plugin 'RSS Aggregator by Feedzy'. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'media:thumbnail@url' parameter in versions up to 5.2.11 due to insufficient input sanitization. The injected scripts execute when users access affected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using Feedzy RSS Feeds plugin versions up to 5.2.11 for injected scripts in pages importing external RSS feeds. Inspect plugin files like index.js and index.asset.php for obfuscated or malicious code. Use WordPress admin to review imported feed content for unexpected scripts or payloads.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to steal user sessions, redirect to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of users. Since no authentication is required beyond controlling an RSS feed, any WordPress site using the vulnerable plugin version is at risk if it imports an attacker-controlled feed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, compromising user data and violating GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection. Organizations may face fines or legal consequences if exploited, as it undermines confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Feedzy RSS Feeds plugin to the latest version (5.2.12 or higher) immediately. Remove any suspicious or unknown external RSS feeds configured for import. Scan WordPress files for malicious code, especially in plugin directories. Consider temporarily disabling the plugin if an update is unavailable.
