Description

The LearnPress – WordPress LMS Plugin for Create and Sell Online Courses plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'quantity (REST) / order_comments (checkout)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.4.10 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. With guest checkout enabled the attack is fully unauthenticated; with guest checkout disabled, any Subscriber-level user can exploit both vectors through their own checkout.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the LearnPress WordPress plugin. It allows attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'quantity' or 'order_comments' parameters due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. These scripts execute when users access infected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using LearnPress plugin versions up to 4.4.10. Check for suspicious input in 'quantity (REST)' or 'order_comments (checkout)' parameters. Review server logs for unusual script injections in checkout or order pages.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts that run when users visit compromised pages. If guest checkout is enabled, the attack requires no authentication. Otherwise, any Subscriber-level user can exploit it during checkout. This could lead to data theft, session hijacking, or defacement of affected sites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited on healthcare-related sites. Compliance risks include data breaches and failure to protect user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the LearnPress plugin to the latest version beyond 4.4.10. Disable guest checkout if enabled. Review and sanitize user input in checkout forms. Monitor for unauthorized script executions in web pages.
