Description

The Groundhogg β€” CRM, Newsletters, and Marketing Automation plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file deletion due to insufficient file path validation in the copy_file function in all versions up to, and including, 4.9.3 This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Sales Representative-level access and above, to delete arbitrary files on the server, which can easily lead to remote code execution when the right file is deleted (such as wp-config.php). This is exploitable by any user holding the plugin-defined import_contacts capability, which is granted by default to the plugin's custom Sales Representative role.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the Groundhogg WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with Sales Representative-level access or higher to delete arbitrary files on the server due to insufficient file path validation in the copy_file function. This can lead to remote code execution if critical files like wp-config.php are deleted.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized file deletions or modifications in WordPress directories, especially in the uploads folder. Review server logs for suspicious CSV imports, REST requests, or webhook activity. Look for the presence of the Sales Representative role or users with import_contacts capability.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could delete important files on your server, potentially causing system failures or allowing them to take control of your WordPress site. This includes deleting configuration files which could lead to complete site compromise.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Groundhogg plugin to the latest version. Remove or restrict access for users with the Sales Representative role or import_contacts capability. Monitor file system changes and restrict write permissions to critical directories.
