Description

The SureCart – Ecommerce Made Easy For Selling Physical Products, Digital Downloads, Subscriptions, Donations, & Payments plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.9.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful execution requires the affected comment to appear on a post that loads the surecart-components runtime (e.g. via a [sc_buy_button] shortcode) and contains no sc-checkout element, as these conditions trigger the innerHTML sink in sc-cart-loader.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the SureCart WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'comment' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access pages containing the malicious comment, particularly on posts using the [sc_buy_button] shortcode without a sc-checkout element.

Detection Guidance

Check for the SureCart plugin version 4.9.4 or lower. Inspect WordPress comments for unsanitized input in the 'comment' parameter. Look for pages with [sc_buy_button] shortcode but no sc-checkout element.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized script execution in users' browsers when they visit compromised pages. Attackers could steal cookies, session tokens, or sensitive data, perform actions on behalf of users, or redirect users to malicious sites. It may also enable phishing attacks or defacement of affected websites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing user data through XSS attacks. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A successful XSS attack may result in unauthorized data access, violating these regulations and potentially leading to legal penalties or fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the SureCart plugin to the latest version. Remove suspicious comments containing scripts. Disable comments on pages using [sc_buy_button] shortcode if not needed.
