Description

FreeRDP from 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains an insecure permission vulnerability in winpr-makecert that creates unencrypted private keys without owner-only file modes. Local users on multi-user Unix hosts can read world-readable key files or open PFX files protected by the hard-coded default password to steal private keys.

Executive Summary

FreeRDP versions from 2.0.0 to 3.32.0 have a flaw in winpr-makecert that creates private keys without proper file permissions. These keys are stored in unencrypted files that are readable by all users on multi-user Unix systems. Attackers can exploit this to steal private keys from world-readable files or PFX files protected by a hard-coded default password.

Detection Guidance

Check for world-readable private key files created by winpr-makecert in FreeRDP versions 2.0.0 to 3.32.0. Use commands like 'find / -type f -perm -o+r -name "*.key" 2>/dev/null' to locate potentially vulnerable files.

Impact Analysis

If you use FreeRDP on a multi-user Unix system, an attacker with local access could read your private keys and impersonate you or decrypt communications. This could lead to unauthorized access to systems or data protected by these keys.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements that mandate strong access controls and encryption for sensitive data. Unauthorized access to private keys may result in data breaches, leading to potential fines or penalties under regulations like GDPR or HIPAA.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. Remove or secure any existing unencrypted private key files by setting strict permissions (e.g., chmod 600) and changing default PFX passwords.
