Heap Out-of-Bounds Read in FreeRDP

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-109248, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains a heap out-of-bounds read in the WinPR clipboard function convert_filedescriptors_to_file_list(), which scans a server-controlled FILEDESCRIPTORW cFileName with unbounded _wcschr() and count_special_chars() calls without a NUL-termination guarantee. A malicious RDP server can send an odd-length FILEDESCRIPTORW blob in a CB_FORMAT_DATA_RESPONSE, crashing X11, Wayland, and SDL clients when the user pastes server-copied files.

Executive Summary

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 has a heap out-of-bounds read in the WinPR clipboard function convert_filedescriptors_to_file_list(). A malicious RDP server can send a specially crafted FILEDESCRIPTORW blob with an odd-length payload and a cFileName field lacking a NUL terminator. This causes the function to perform unbounded scans on server-controlled data, leading to a heap out-of-bounds read when pasting files.

Detection Guidance

Check FreeRDP version with 'xfreerdp --version' or 'freerdp2-shadow --version'. If version is below 3.32.0, the system is vulnerable. Monitor clipboard-related crashes in X11, Wayland, or SDL clients during file paste operations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause client-side crashes or denial of service when pasting files from a malicious RDP server into applications on Unix desktop builds (X11, Wayland, SDL). It does not directly expose sensitive information but may disrupt normal operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes client-side crashes or denial of service in FreeRDP clients when pasting files from a malicious RDP server. It does not directly expose sensitive information, so it is unlikely to directly impact compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA. However, denial of service could disrupt systems handling sensitive data, potentially affecting availability requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later immediately. Disable clipboard sharing in RDP connections if not required. Avoid connecting to untrusted RDP servers until patched.
