Description

FreeRDP 2.1.0 before 3.32.0 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in the static rdpsnd channel disconnect path, which frees audio formats and device without joining play_thread. A malicious RDP server can disconnect while asynchronous Wave2 playback processes queued PDUs, causing the client to read freed heap memory and crash.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

FreeRDP versions 2.1.0 through 3.31.0 have a use-after-free vulnerability in the static rdpsnd channel disconnect path. When a malicious RDP server disconnects during audio playback, it frees audio formats and devices without properly stopping the playback thread. This causes the client to read freed memory, leading to crashes or potential arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check your FreeRDP version. Versions 2.1.0 through 3.31.0 are affected. Run 'xfreerdp --version' or 'apt list --installed | grep freerdp' to verify. Monitor for crashes during RDP sessions, especially when audio playback is active.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can crash the FreeRDP client or allow arbitrary code execution. An attacker would need to control the RDP server and send crafted audio packets during disconnection. The impact depends on the client's environment and privileges.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable audio redirection in RDP sessions by using the '/sound:none' flag with xfreerdp or disabling audio in your RDP client settings.
