Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a memory leak in the PNG encoder, which does not release allocated memory when libpng initialization fails. Attackers who can repeatedly trigger PNG encoding operations in which libpng initialization fails can exhaust memory and cause a denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a memory leak in ImageMagick versions before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32. When libpng initialization fails during PNG encoding, the software does not release allocated memory. Attackers can repeatedly trigger this failure to exhaust system memory, causing a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for ImageMagick versions affected by the memory leak in PNG encoding. Use commands like 'convert --version' or 'magick --version' to check installed versions. Compare against versions 6.9.13-57 or 7.1.2-32 to identify exposure.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash systems by consuming all available memory. This may lead to service outages, degraded performance, or system instability for applications using vulnerable ImageMagick versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes a denial of service by exhausting system memory, which does not directly impact data confidentiality or integrity. GDPR and HIPAA focus on protecting personal and health data, so this issue does not directly violate these standards unless it disrupts services handling such data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-57 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-32 or later for the 7.x branch. If upgrading is not immediately possible, restrict access to ImageMagick's PNG encoding functionality or disable it entirely.
