Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a memory leak in the YUV encoder, which fails to release allocated memory when a specific operation fails. Attackers can supply crafted input that triggers the failing encoder operation, leaking memory and potentially exhausting resources to cause a denial of service.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-109263 is a memory leak vulnerability in ImageMagick's YUV encoder. When a specific operation fails, the encoder does not release allocated memory, allowing attackers to supply crafted input that triggers the failure. This can cause memory exhaustion and lead to a denial-of-service condition.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick on your system. Run the command: convert --version or identify --version. If the output shows a version before 6.9.13-57 or 7.x before 7.1.2-32, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause system slowdowns or crashes due to memory exhaustion. It may disrupt services relying on ImageMagick for image processing, potentially leading to downtime or degraded performance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-57 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-32 or later for the 7.x branch. If updating is not possible, disable YUV image processing in ImageMagick by modifying configuration files or removing support for YUV formats.
