Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains uncontrolled recursion in the MVG decoder that can exhaust the program stack. An attacker who controls a file name processed by ImageMagick can trigger a stack overflow that crashes the process, causing a denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack overflow in ImageMagick's MVG decoder caused by uncontrolled recursion. It occurs when ImageMagick processes a file name containing malicious input, triggering excessive recursion that exhausts the program stack and crashes the process, leading to a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Check ImageMagick version with 'convert --version' or 'magick --version'. If using versions before 6.9.13-57 or 7.x before 7.1.2-32, the system is vulnerable. Monitor for crashes during image processing, especially with SVG files.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this by providing a specially crafted file name to ImageMagick, causing the application to crash. This results in a denial of service, disrupting any services relying on ImageMagick for image processing.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service by crashing the ImageMagick process through stack overflow. While it does not directly expose or leak data, a denial of service could impact availability of systems processing images, potentially violating compliance requirements for service availability in standards like HIPAA for healthcare systems or GDPR for data processing systems.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ImageMagick to patched versions (6.9.13-57 or 7.1.2-32 or later). Apply vendor patches if available. Restrict processing of untrusted SVG files until updated.
