Description

ImageMagick 7.1.1-7 before 7.1.2-32 contains a heap buffer over-read vulnerability that allows attackers to read beyond allocated memory due to incorrect string termination in XMP profiles. Attackers can supply a crafted image containing a malformed XMP profile to trigger the over-read and crash the application.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap buffer over-read in ImageMagick 7.1.1-7 before 7.1.2-32 caused by incorrect string termination in XMP profiles. Attackers can exploit this by providing a crafted image with a malformed XMP profile to read beyond allocated memory and crash the application.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the installed ImageMagick version. Run 'convert --version' or 'magick --version' to see if your version is below 7.1.2-32. If so, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, monitor for crashes when processing images with XMP profiles.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to crash the ImageMagick application by triggering an out-of-bounds read. While it does not directly lead to code execution, it may cause denial-of-service conditions or instability in systems processing affected images.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-32 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, avoid processing untrusted images, especially those with XMP metadata. Implement network monitoring to detect exploitation attempts.
