Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a stack overflow in the MSL decoder caused by an incorrect depth check that fails to limit recursion. Attackers can supply a set of crafted MSL images that exhaust the stack when one of them is read, crashing the process and causing a denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a stack overflow in ImageMagick's MSL decoder caused by incorrect depth checks that fail to limit recursion. Attackers can craft malicious MSL images that exhaust the stack when processed, crashing the application and causing a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed ImageMagick version using commands like 'convert --version' or 'magick --version'. If the version is below 6.9.13-57 or 7.1.2-32, the system is vulnerable. Monitor for crashes when processing MSL images.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows attackers to crash ImageMagick by supplying crafted MSL images, leading to denial of service. This could disrupt image processing tasks, cause system instability, or require restarting affected services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service by crashing the ImageMagick process through stack exhaustion, which could disrupt systems processing images. While not directly violating GDPR or HIPAA, such disruptions may impact availability of systems handling personal or health data, potentially leading to compliance issues if service levels are not maintained.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 6.9.13-57 or later for 6.x and 7.1.2-32 or later for 7.x. Disable MSL processing if not required. Restrict access to ImageMagick functions to trusted users.
