Description

ImageMagick before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32 contains a use after free vulnerability in the PDF writer when writing CMYK images with JPEG2000 compression. Attackers can supply a crafted CMYK image that, when written to PDF with JPEG2000 compression, causes freed memory to be reused, potentially crashing the process.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in ImageMagick affecting versions before 6.9.13-57 and 7.x before 7.1.2-32. It occurs when processing CMYK images with JPEG2000 compression in the PDF writer. Attackers can craft an image that causes freed memory to be reused, potentially crashing the application or leading to other unintended behavior.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick on your system. Run: convert --version or identify --version. If the output shows versions before 6.9.13-57 or 7.x before 7.1.2-32, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes application crashes when processing specific images, which could disrupt services relying on ImageMagick. Since exploitation requires network access and has high complexity, real-world attacks are less likely but possible. No direct data theft or modification is expected, but system availability may be affected.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability, which could lead to service disruptions. While it does not directly affect data confidentiality or integrity, repeated crashes in systems handling sensitive data (e.g., medical or personal records) may violate compliance requirements for uptime and reliability under standards like HIPAA or GDPR.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to versions 6.9.13-57 or later for the 6.x branch, or 7.1.2-32 or later for the 7.x branch. Apply patches from the official ImageMagick repository or your distribution's package manager.
