Description

ImageMagick 7.1.2-30 before 7.1.2-32 contains a use after free vulnerability in the WBINFO decoder that occurs when a memory allocation fails during image decoding. Attackers can supply a crafted image that, when decoded under memory allocation failure conditions, causes freed memory to be reused, crashing the application.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in ImageMagick 7.1.2-30 before 7.1.2-32. It occurs in the WBINFO decoder when memory allocation fails during image decoding. Attackers can exploit this by providing a specially crafted image that triggers a crash by reusing freed memory.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed ImageMagick version using commands like 'convert --version' or 'magick --version'. If the version is below 7.1.2-32 or 6.9.13-57, the system is vulnerable. Monitor for crashes during image processing, especially with WBINFO decoder operations.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to crash the ImageMagick application, potentially leading to denial-of-service conditions. If exploited, it may disrupt image processing tasks or services relying on ImageMagick.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability by causing crashes under specific conditions. It does not directly affect confidentiality or integrity of data. Compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA is indirectly impacted only if system crashes lead to service disruptions affecting data processing or availability requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Update ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-32 or later to address the use after free vulnerability in the WBINFO decoder.
