Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a NULL pointer dereference in ImageMagick's PostScript decoder. It occurs when a policy limit is reached during processing of a crafted PostScript file. Attackers can exploit this to crash the application, causing a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick on your system. Run the command: convert --version or identify -version. If the version is between 7.1.1-31 and 7.1.2-32, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you use ImageMagick versions 7.1.1-31 through 7.1.2-32, an attacker could send a malicious PostScript file to crash your application. This would disrupt services relying on ImageMagick, such as image processing tasks, leading to downtime and potential data processing failures.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts availability, which may affect compliance with regulations requiring data availability like HIPAA for healthcare data. GDPR focuses on confidentiality and integrity, so this issue does not directly impact GDPR compliance unless it leads to data unavailability during processing.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-32 or later. If updating is not possible, restrict processing of PostScript files via policy settings or disable PostScript decoding entirely.
