Description

Open WebUI before 0.11.4 contains a missing authorization vulnerability that allows authenticated users to reach disabled model provider backends by supplying an explicit backend index. Attackers can pass the index as a path segment or query parameter on Ollama and OpenAI-compatible listing routes to trigger requests carrying configured API keys, read version strings, and enumerate connections.

Executive Summary

Open WebUI before version 0.11.4 has a missing authorization vulnerability where authenticated users can access disabled model provider backends by providing an explicit backend index. This is done by passing the index in API routes compatible with Ollama and OpenAI, allowing attackers to trigger requests with configured API keys, read version strings, and enumerate connections.

Detection Guidance

Check Open WebUI version with: curl -s http://<target>/api/version. If version is below 0.11.4, the system is vulnerable. Inspect API routes for disabled backend access by testing paths like /api/models?backend_index=<index> or /api/versions?backend_index=<index>.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated users could interact with disabled backends, potentially sending requests that include API keys, reading version strings, and enumerating connections. While the API key itself is not exposed, version strings are returned, and in some cases, users might even send inference requests to disabled backends.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Open WebUI to version 0.11.4 or later immediately. Review and restrict user roles to prevent unauthorized access to disabled backends. Monitor API routes for suspicious backend index queries.
