Description

Grav Git Sync 1.0.2 through 3.4.12 contains a command injection vulnerability that allows authenticated content editors to execute OS commands by injecting shell substitutions into profile fields. When the gravuser or gravfull author mode is enabled, attackers can set a malicious username, full name, or email that reaches PHP exec() via git commit --author, running commands as the web-server account.

Executive Summary

Grav Git Sync versions 1.0.2 through 3.4.12 have a command injection flaw. Authenticated content editors can run OS commands by inserting shell substitutions into profile fields like username or email. When gravuser or gravfull author mode is enabled, malicious input in these fields gets passed to PHP exec() via git commit --author, executing commands as the web server account.

Detection Guidance

Check Grav Git Sync plugin versions between 1.0.2 and 3.4.12. Inspect user profiles for suspicious shell substitutions in username, full name, or email fields. Review git commit logs for unauthorized --author parameters.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with editor access could take full control of the server hosting Grav, steal sensitive data, install malware, or disrupt services. Since commands run as the web server account, they may bypass some isolation protections. This could lead to data breaches, defacement, or further network compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or health data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Organizations may face fines, legal action, and reputational damage if exploited. Compliance programs could be deemed inadequate if such flaws remain unpatched.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Grav Git Sync to a patched version. Disable gravuser and gravfull author modes. Audit user profiles for malicious entries. Restrict web-server account permissions.
