Description

Grav Login OAuth plugin (grav-plugin-login-oauth) before 1.4.3 provisions OAuth accounts as ordinary Grav users with a deterministic <provider>.<id> username and an unsalted MD5 hash of the provider identifier as the password, without disabling password login. Unauthenticated remote attackers who learn or guess a provider identifier can reproduce these credentials and log in, gaining administrative control of privileged accounts.

Executive Summary

The Grav Login OAuth plugin before version 1.4.3 creates OAuth accounts as regular Grav users with predictable usernames and weak passwords. It uses an unsalted MD5 hash of the provider identifier as the password and does not disable password login. Attackers who know or guess a provider identifier can generate valid credentials and log in, gaining full administrative access.

Detection Guidance

Check Grav installations for the grav-plugin-login-oauth plugin version before 1.4.3. Inspect user accounts for deterministic usernames like provider.id and unsalted MD5 password hashes of provider identifiers. Review authentication logs for unauthorized login attempts.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated remote attackers can exploit this to gain administrative control of Grav instances using the vulnerable plugin. This could lead to complete system compromise, data theft, or unauthorized modifications. The attack requires no special access and is straightforward to execute if the provider identifier is known.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's access controls. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to potential exposure of sensitive user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade grav-plugin-login-oauth to version 1.4.3 or later. Disable OAuth accounts with weak credentials and enforce strong password policies. Monitor for unauthorized access and revoke any suspicious sessions.
