Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) issue in Admidio versions 4.0.12 through 4.3.17 and 5.0.0 before 5.0.15. It exists in system/redirect.php due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2021-43810. Attackers can inject JavaScript via the url GET parameter by crafting a javascript: URL with a fake http:// segment. When victims click the link, the script executes in the Admidio origin.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious GET requests to system/redirect.php with a url parameter containing javascript: or http:// followed by malicious script. Inspect server logs for unusual redirects or injected JavaScript in responses.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the Admidio application when users click a malicious link. This could lead to session hijacking, theft of sensitive data, or unauthorized actions performed on behalf of the user.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations using affected Admidio versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Admidio to version 4.3.18, 5.0.15, or later. If immediate upgrade isn't possible, apply input validation to sanitize the url parameter in system/redirect.php to block javascript: URLs.
