Description

SurrealDB from 3.0.0 before 3.3.0 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows authenticated record users to read records in other namespaces or databases by resolving record ids through FETCH. Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authorization bypass in SurrealDB versions 3.0.0 to 3.2.9. Authenticated users with record access can read data from other namespaces or databases by manipulating record IDs through FETCH operations. Specifically, attackers can switch namespaces and reference known record IDs in RETURN … FETCH queries to access another tenant's data if table permissions allow reads.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your SurrealDB version is between 3.0.0 and 3.2.9. Run the command: surrealdb version. If the version is within this range, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, test for unauthorized record access by attempting to fetch records across namespaces using RETURN … FETCH queries with known record IDs.

Impact Analysis

If you use SurrealDB in a multi-tenant environment, this flaw could allow unauthorized users to access sensitive data belonging to other tenants or users. This may lead to data breaches, loss of confidentiality, and potential compliance violations depending on the nature of the exposed data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements such as GDPR (data protection and privacy) or HIPAA (protected health information) by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive personal or health data. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust if such breaches occur due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SurrealDB to version 3.3.0 or later to address the authorization bypass vulnerability. Ensure proper namespace and database permissions are configured to restrict unauthorized access.
