Description

Adminer before 6.1.1 contains a remote code execution vulnerability that allows authenticated SQLite users to bypass ATTACH and VACUUM INTO restrictions by prefixing statements with a UTF-8 byte-order mark. Attackers can attach a database file at a PHP-served path and create a table named with PHP code to execute it as the web server user.

Executive Summary

Adminer before version 6.1.1 has a remote code execution flaw. Authenticated SQLite users can bypass security restrictions by using a UTF-8 byte-order mark to manipulate SQL statements. This allows attaching a database file to a PHP-served path and creating a table with PHP code that executes as the web server user.

Detection Guidance

Check Adminer version for versions before 6.1.1. Inspect server logs for unusual database attachments or PHP code execution attempts. Look for UTF-8 byte-order marks in SQL queries.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain control of the web server by executing arbitrary PHP code. This may lead to full system compromise, data theft, or unauthorized access to sensitive information stored on the server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could result in unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements. Non-compliance may lead to legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Adminer to version 6.1.1 or later immediately. Restrict database user permissions to prevent unauthorized attachments. Monitor for suspicious activity in server logs.
