Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an incorrect permissions issue in Edgeless Systems Contrast versions 1.8.0 through 1.24.0. The node installer writes the containerd configuration file with world-writable permissions (0666), allowing local unprivileged users to modify the file. Attackers could exploit this by changing settings like the runc location to escalate privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check the permissions of the containerd config file, typically located at /etc/containerd/config.toml, using the command: ls -l /etc/containerd/config.toml. If it shows world-writable permissions (0666), the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

Local unprivileged users on affected nodes can modify the containerd config to escalate privileges. This could allow attackers to gain elevated access to the system, potentially compromising confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data and services.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Contrast to version 1.24.1 or later. If updating is not possible, manually change the containerd config file permissions to 0644 using chmod 0644 /etc/containerd/config.toml. Restrict access to the containerd config directory to root only.
