Description

The HivePress – Business Directory, Listings & Classified Ads Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'message' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.7.32 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires that the site administrator has enabled user listing submission, and the script executes in the victim's browser at the moment of successful login via the embedded form on the attacker's listing page.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the HivePress WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'message' parameter. The issue arises due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 1.7.32.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugin versions for HivePress up to 1.7.32. Inspect user-submitted listings for malicious scripts in the 'message' parameter. Review server logs for unusual form submissions or XSS attempts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject scripts that execute in users' browsers when they access an infected page. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or defacement of pages. The attack requires the site admin to have enabled user listing submission.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the HivePress plugin to the latest version. Disable user listing submission if not required. Implement input sanitization for form fields. Monitor for unauthorized script injections in listings.
