Executive Summary

CVE-2026-109392 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Pimcore through version 2026.3.1. It allows authenticated backend users with edit permissions to inject malicious scripts by storing unescaped URLs in ExternalImage fields. When other users view version previews or diff views, the injected scripts execute in the admin origin, potentially leading to unauthorized actions or data theft.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect Pimcore installations for ExternalImage fields containing unescaped URLs or JavaScript payloads. Check version preview or diff views for executed scripts. Review logs for unauthorized admin actions. Use browser developer tools to inspect HTML attributes for malicious event handlers like onerror.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute JavaScript in the Pimcore admin interface. This could lead to unauthorized data access, modification of content, or other malicious actions performed by the attacker while impersonating legitimate users. The impact is limited to users with access to version previews or diff views.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of sensitive data, which may violate GDPR or HIPAA compliance requirements. Organizations using affected Pimcore versions may face increased risk of data breaches, potentially resulting in regulatory penalties or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Pimcore to the latest patched version. Implement URL validation and escaping in ExternalImage fields. Restrict data object edit permissions to trusted users. Monitor admin sessions for suspicious activity. Apply input sanitization in version preview templates.
