Stored XSS in Mang Board WordPress Plugin

Description

The Mang Board plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'content' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The sanitization bypass is further compounded by the ability to omit the data_type parameter in a modify request, which skips the HTMLPurifier branch entirely and leaves only mbw_htmlspecialchars2 encoding β€” fully reversed at render β€” as the sole barrier.

Executive Summary

The Mang Board WordPress plugin has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 2.4.4. It occurs because the 'content' parameter does not properly sanitize input and escape output. Authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when other users view the infected pages. The issue is worsened by a sanitization bypass where omitting the 'data_type' parameter skips HTMLPurifier checks, leaving only weak encoding that is reversed during rendering.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Mang Board plugin versions up to 2.4.4. Inspect pages for unauthorized scripts in the 'content' parameter. Use Wordfence or similar security plugins to scan for stored XSS patterns.

Impact Analysis

If you use the Mang Board plugin, attackers could steal your cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. They might redirect you to malicious sites, deface your pages, or perform actions on your behalf. Since the attack requires only subscriber-level access, it could affect all users interacting with the plugin's pages, including visitors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may expose protected health information if user data is compromised. Organizations using this plugin must address it to maintain compliance with data protection regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Mang Board plugin to the latest version beyond 2.4.4. Remove subscriber-level access if not required. Implement strict input validation and output escaping for all user-generated content.
