Description

The NotificationX – FOMO, Live Sales Notification, WooCommerce Sales Popup, GDPR, Social Proof, Announcement Banner & Floating Notification Bar plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This requires that an administrator has previously enabled a WordPress.org Reviews campaign and placed the notificationx-pro/notificationx dynamic block on a public page, both of which are documented, supported plugin workflows.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the 'name' parameter. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages that execute when users visit those pages. The issue arises from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping.

Detection Guidance

Check for the NotificationX plugin versions up to and including 3.3.3. Look for unauthorized script injections in pages where the plugin's dynamic block is used. Review WordPress admin settings for enabled campaigns and public page placements.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or deface your website. Since it requires an admin to enable a specific campaign and place a dynamic block on a public page, the risk depends on those configurations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited on healthcare-related sites.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the NotificationX plugin to the latest version beyond 3.3.3. Disable any WordPress.org Reviews campaigns and remove the notificationx-pro/notificationx dynamic block from public pages. Scan for and remove any injected scripts.
