CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.121.0 and 16.x before 16.34.0 have an SQL injection vulnerability in multiple endpoints due to missing input validation. This allows any authenticated user, even without assigned roles, to send crafted requests and access sensitive data or escalate privileges.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in Frappe ERPNext, monitor network traffic for suspicious SQL queries or unusual database access patterns. Check application logs for error messages indicating SQL syntax issues. Use tools like SQLMap to test endpoints for injection flaws, but only in a controlled environment with permission.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read other users' sensitive information, such as personal or financial data, or gain administrative access to the system. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized transactions, or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) by exposing sensitive user data. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to unauthorized data access.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Frappe ERPNext to version 15.121.0 or later for v15.x, or 16.34.0 or later for v16.x. Apply input validation to all user-supplied data in endpoints. Restrict database permissions to limit exposure. Review and audit user roles to ensure least privilege access.
