CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.119.1 and 16.x before 16.32.0 have an SQL injection vulnerability in certain endpoints due to missing input validation. Authenticated attackers with low privileges can exploit this by sending specially crafted requests to inject SQL code and retrieve sensitive data from the ERPNext database.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this SQL injection vulnerability requires checking ERPNext endpoints for improper input validation. Review web server access logs for unusual SQL-like query patterns or error messages. Use tools like sqlmap to test endpoints for injection flaws. Inspect network traffic for suspicious requests targeting known vulnerable endpoints.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to extract sensitive information from the ERPNext database, potentially exposing confidential business or user data. It could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or further exploitation of the system depending on the extracted data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations due to unauthorized data access or breaches. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage if sensitive data is exposed through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ERPNext to version 15.119.1 or later for v15.x, or 16.32.0 or later for v16.x. Apply input validation to all endpoints handling user input. Restrict database user permissions to limit data exposure. Monitor database queries for unauthorized access attempts.
