CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL injection flaw in the Online Reviewer System 1.0. It exists in the PDO::prepare function of login/index.php where the username and password inputs are not properly sanitized. Attackers can manipulate these inputs to inject malicious SQL queries, allowing unauthorized access to the database.

Detection Guidance

To detect SQL injection vulnerabilities in the Online Reviewer System, inspect the login/index.php file for improper use of PDO::prepare. Check if user inputs (username/password) are directly concatenated into SQL queries without parameterization. Use tools like SQLmap to test for injection points: sqlmap -u "http://target/login/index.php" --data="username=test&password=test" --batch.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the database. This may lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or deletion. Sensitive information like user credentials or system data could be exposed or manipulated.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access or exposure. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the login/index.php file to use prepared statements with PDO::prepare for all SQL queries. Ensure all user inputs are properly parameterized. Disable remote access to the system if not required. Monitor network traffic for suspicious SQL injection attempts.
