Description

Frappe ERPNext before 15.119.1 and 16.x before 16.32.0 contains an SQL injection vulnerability in some endpoints that lack input validation, allowing crafted input to alter database queries. Authenticated attackers with low privileges can send specially crafted requests to these endpoints to extract sensitive information from the database.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.119.1 and 16.x before 16.32.0 have an SQL injection flaw in certain endpoints due to missing input validation. Authenticated attackers with low privileges can exploit this by sending specially crafted requests to manipulate database queries and extract sensitive data.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in Frappe ERPNext, inspect network traffic for suspicious requests targeting endpoints with weak input validation. Check application logs for unusual database query patterns or errors. Use tools like SQLMap to test endpoints for injection flaws, but ensure proper authorization to avoid legal issues.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could access or steal sensitive information stored in the database, such as user credentials, financial data, or other confidential records. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to systems, or further exploitation of the application.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could result in non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations due to unauthorized data access or exposure. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage for failing to protect sensitive data adequately.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Frappe ERPNext to version 15.119.1 or later for v15.x, or 16.32.0 or later for v16.x. Apply input validation to all endpoints handling user input. Restrict database permissions to limit exposure. Monitor for unauthorized access or data exfiltration attempts.
