CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext before versions 15.121.0 and 16.x before 16.34.0 has an SQL injection vulnerability in certain endpoints. This flaw occurs due to insufficient input validation, allowing authenticated attackers with high privileges to inject malicious SQL queries. These queries can be used to extract sensitive data from the database.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this SQL injection vulnerability requires checking ERPNext endpoints for unusual input handling. Review server logs for suspicious SQL query patterns or errors. Use tools like SQLMap to test endpoints for injection flaws, but only in a controlled environment. Inspect network traffic for malformed requests targeting known vulnerable endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to access or steal sensitive information stored in the database, such as user credentials, financial data, or other confidential records. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to systems, or further attacks on the infrastructure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with regulations like GDPR or HIPAA, as it may result in unauthorized access to personal or protected health information. Organizations could face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to data breaches caused by this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Frappe ERPNext to version 15.121.0 or later for v15.x, or 16.34.0 or later for v16.x. Disable high-privilege accounts temporarily if possible. Implement strict input validation for all endpoints. Monitor database queries for unauthorized access attempts.
