CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.102.0 and 16.x before 16.8.0 have an SQL injection vulnerability in certain endpoints due to insufficient input validation. This flaw allows authenticated low-privilege attackers to manipulate database queries by sending specially crafted requests, potentially extracting sensitive data from the database.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in Frappe ERPNext, inspect network traffic for suspicious requests targeting endpoints with database interactions. Check application logs for unusual query patterns or errors. Use tools like SQLMap to test for injection flaws in authenticated endpoints.

Impact Analysis

If you use affected Frappe ERPNext versions, attackers could access sensitive database information without high privileges. This may lead to data breaches, unauthorized data exposure, or further system compromise depending on the database contents.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage due to potential data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Frappe ERPNext to version 15.102.0 or later (for v15) or 16.8.0 or later (for v16). Apply input validation to all user-supplied data in endpoints. Restrict database permissions for application users to limit potential damage from exploitation.
