CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.106.0 and 16.x before 16.16.0 have an SQL injection vulnerability due to missing input validation in multiple endpoints. Authenticated attackers can exploit this by sending crafted requests to manipulate database queries and steal sensitive data from the ERPNext database.

Detection Guidance

Detection requires reviewing ERPNext logs for suspicious SQL query patterns or unauthorized data access attempts. Check for unusual requests to endpoints like /api/method/frappe.client.get_list or /api/method/frappe.client.get. Monitor database query logs for errors or unexpected queries.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated attackers could extract sensitive information from the ERPNext database, including user credentials, financial data, or other confidential records. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, or further system compromise depending on the exposed data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or other regulations due to unauthorized data access or exposure. Organizations may face legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage if sensitive data is compromised through this SQL injection flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ERPNext to version 15.106.0 or later if using 15.x, or 16.16.0 or later if using 16.x. Apply input validation to all API endpoints handling database queries. Restrict database user permissions to least privilege. Review and audit database access logs for signs of exploitation.
