Description

Frappe ERPNext before 15.112.0 and 16.x before 16.23.0 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability caused by a configuration field, writable by common operational roles, that accepts an arbitrary outbound request destination without validation. Authenticated attackers can set the field to hosts of their choosing, making the server issue requests to addresses reachable only from inside the deployment's network.

Executive Summary

This is a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.112.0 and 16.x before 16.23.0. It occurs because a configuration field, writable by common operational roles, allows setting arbitrary outbound request destinations without validation. Attackers with authenticated access can exploit this to make the server send requests to internal network addresses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could use this to access internal systems, exfiltrate sensitive data, or interact with services not exposed to the internet. This may lead to unauthorized data access, service disruption, or further network compromise depending on the internal services targeted.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Frappe ERPNext to version 15.112.0 or later if using 15.x, or to 16.23.0 or later if using 16.x. Restrict write access to configuration fields that allow outbound request destinations to only trusted administrative roles.
